The Department of Ophthalmology at MCU-FDTMF Hospital, established in 1954, is recognized for pioneering independent ophthalmological services in the Philippines. This department has a rich history of innovation and excellence, led by a succession of esteemed chairpersons and staffed by specialists in various ophthalmic fields. Our services cover a wide range of eye care, from external ocular examinations, optic nerve and glaucoma screening, to advanced surgeries like extracapsular cataract extraction and corneal transplantation.
We are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including the Vision and Eye Wellness (ViEW) Center, which provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services using cutting-edge technology like the Argon Laser and Carl Zeiss Visucam.The department is committed to providing top-notch ophthalmic care, supported by ongoing research and development in the field. Training Program
• The Ophthalmology Residency
The Ophthalmology Residency Training Program at MCU-FDTMF Hospital is accredited by the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology and has produced a number of distinguished diplomates and subspecialists in fields such as Uveitis, Glaucoma, and Oculoplasty. The program is designed to provide comprehensive training in all aspects of eye care, from basic screenings to complex surgeries.
• Exposure
Residents are exposed to a broad spectrum of conditions and treatments, facilitating their growth into well-rounded ophthalmologists. The program includes hands-on experience in our modern OPD and state-of-the-art ViEW Center, as well as participation in groundbreaking research and community service initiatives.

Under the leadership of Dr. Victorino D. Perlas, Jr., the department has enhanced its educational offerings, incorporating monthly subspecialty lectures, bi-annual morbidity conferences, and postgraduate courses.
